MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — At the Capitol, a bill to allow accessory dwelling units or ADUs to be built statewide may be amended.
The measure would prohibit the units from being used as short-term rentals. During a public hearing, Representative Dave Armstrong says many communities lack the means to enforce that, and the bill specifies no penalties for violating that prohibition.
“Who’s going to police that? Rice Lake, Bill’s going to police that he’s the building inspector along with everything else he does. They don’t have anybody else that can do that,” Armstrong said.
The bill’s author, Representative Joy Goeben, has heard similar concerns in her district
“They don’t have the personnel to do it, so I appreciate the idea of if there was a penalty, that penalty would be directed to use sort of to monitor that for future. So I would love to work with you on an amendment for that,” Goeben said.
ADUs are typically built on the same property near a larger single-family home.
