BARRON, Wis. (NWN) — The Barron County Board of Supervisors will consider adopting a temporary moratorium on new data center projects.
The proposed 9-month ban would prohibit the construction of new data centers used for things including large scale digital storage and cloud or AI computing. The purpose is to not permanently prohibit data centers, but to give the county time to develop and adopt specific data center zoning regulations that are inline with the county’s comprehensive plan.
Individual townships in the county have adopted similar moratoriums, including Dovre, Lakeland and Maple Plain townships. Polk County also adopted one this month.
The board will meet at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Barron County Government Center. The meeting is live streamed on YouTube. No public comment will be taken during the meeting, but anyone with questions or comments is asked to contact their county district supervisor or county administrator Jeff French.
