COMSTOCK, Wis. (WJMC) — A black bear attacked a woman near Comstock this weekend.
The Department of Natural Resources said the 69-year-old woman was attacked around 2 p.m. on Saturday and was taken in to a local hospital for treatment. The specifics of her injuries and current condition were not known at this time.
Dispatch logs said the attack happened in the woman’s yard. A Cumberland Police officer responded and fired a rifle at the bear three times, striking it once. The bear ran off and police and DNR wardens attempted to track it with a trained hound dog, but were not successful in finding it.
A cub was found in a tree, suggesting the attack involved a sow.
Bear traps have been set and wildlife officials intend to euthanize the bear to assess its condition and determine why the attack happened.
