While bear attacks on humans are exceedingly rare, this weekend’s black bear attack in rural Comstock is a reminder incidents do happen and to take precautions when there are bears in the area, says the Department of Natural Resources.
Wildlife officials respond to 500 to 600 bear complaints annually and most issues are resolved by eliminating the bear attractant. Things like bird feeders, easily accessible garbage cans, dirty and unsecured grills or pet food left outside. In more problem situations, bears are trapped and relocated by wildlife officials.
The DNR says black bears are normally shy and avoid humans. Still, if you encounter a bear, it is best to leave them alone, make your presence known by making loud noises, and to back away safely. More bear safety and deterrence tips can be found on the DNR’s website.
