MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Republicans on the legislature’s Joint Finance Committee voted Thursday to invest $336 million more into K-12 education in the next state budget.

That amount is well short of the $3.3 billion Governor Tony Evers wanted.

“This is woefully small in terms of investment, and the governor’s budget managed to make a tremendous investment in public education,” said Kenosha Democrat, Representative Tip Mcguire.

“Budgets are about compromises, and even though we don’t all get everything we want, we should still be able to all come together and move the ball forward in the right direction,” said Rice Lake Republican, Senator Romaine Quinn.

Quinn said the additional money for the Department of Public Instruction would fund 90% of the costliest special education aid.

Republicans also approved their own $1.3 billion tax cut plan which includes a new exclusion on retirement income for those 67 and older.
