MADISON, Wis. (WJMC) — Stay vigilant for lightning strikes during the summer season.
As the summer months continue, so does the potential for severe thunderstorms and the danger of lightning strikes that they bring. Tuesday, June 24, marked Lightning Safety Awareness Day in Wisconsin, and ReadyWisconsin encourages residents to take action and be aware of dangerous weather.
If you are traveling, ReadyWisconsin recommends paying attention to the forecast for the area you’re visiting, as well as know where to take shelter if necessary. Residents are encouraged to take immediate shelter indoors or inside a fully-enclosed vehicle when you hear thunder. Get out of open areas, and stay away from bodies of water if a storm is imminent, and while indoors, keep distance from any appliances that may put you in direct contact with electricity. And if a person is struck by lightning, immediately call 911.
