MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — A new advisory guide for eating game and pan fish released by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Department of Health Services.
Fish is a great source of lean protein and healthy omega-3 fats, but pollutants in some water bodies can make fish hazardous to eat in small or large amounts. The DNR caught fish, tested them for contaminants and issued the 2026-2028 Choose Wisely Booklet, advising which fish are not safe to eat from various lakes and rivers.
In Barron County, walleye over 15 inches from Silver Lake may have mercury and one or fewer should be eaten a month.
In Chippewa County, advisories for lake sturgeon and carp from the Chippewa River, crappie and walleye from Round Lake, and walleye from Horseshoe and Sand lakes.
In Dunn County, advisories for carp and lake sturgeon from the Chippewa River and channel catfish from the Red Cedar River.
In Polk County, advisories for largemouth bass in Pipe Lake and buffalo, white bass and channel catfish in the St. Croix River.
In Rusk County, walleye in the Flambeau River and Sand Lake have advisories.
In Sawyer County, advisories for some fish in Black, Ghost, Moose, Loretta, Upper Holly, Windigo and Winter lakes.
In St. Croix County, advisories for buffalo, white bass and channel catfish in the St. Croix River.
The advisory can be found on the DNR’s website. Search for the “fish consumption booklet.”
