MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — A new lawsuit seeks to roll back abortion restrictions in Wisconsin.
Filed by Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin in Dane County Circuit Court, the lawsuit argues state law requiring a 24-hour waiting period between an initial appointment and an abortion is medically unnecessary. It also challenges state law limiting abortion care, including medication abortions, to licensed physicians and not advanced practice clinicians.
Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin President Tanya Atkinson said this is about allowing reproductive healthcare decisions without “unnecessary government interference.”
The lawsuit names Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne as defendant and representative for all Wisconsin DAs, since anyone who is not a licensed physician can be charged for administering an abortion.
Democratic candidate for Governor David Crowley said Republican Tom Tiffany “supported banning abortion nationwide at zero weeks” and would bring his “extreme agenda to Wisconsin.”
Tiffany did not directly address the suit in a statement, but said he would uphold existing state law, which allows abortion until 20 weeks after fertilization, unless the mother’s life is in danger.
