On this day in US history, President Abraham Lincoln signed a charter that authorized the first college for deaf students on April 8, 1864. The school is based in Washington, D.C., and was the first institution of its kind. The school has now become Gaullaudet University, known as one of the leading centers of education for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
