(Milwaukee, WI) — The Brewers host the San Diego Padres in the National League Division Series opener Saturday at American Family Field. Oddsmakers say Milwaukee is favored after winning more regular-season games than any other Major League team. San Diego made it this far by beating the Chicago Cubs in a Wild Card series. The Padres beat the Brewers four-out-of-six meetings this season. Milwaukee sends Jacob Misiorowski, 16-5 and a 1.80 ERA, against Robbie Ray, 13-8 and a 3.60 ERA.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers produced the best record in Major League Baseball and won a franchise-record 103 games with a statistical profile that hadn’t been seen in over six decades. The Brewers had the second-highest scoring output in the majors despite matching the second-lowest homer total of any team. Sportradar says the Brewers are the first club since the 1960 Chicago White Sox to finish among the top three MLB teams in runs scored and among the bottom three in homers. The Brewers are taking that approach into the playoffs as they seek their first World Series title.

ATLANTA (AP) — Michael Harris II hit a three-run homer in the first inning, Chris Sale came out of the bullpen to get the final four outs and the Atlanta Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 in the decisive Game 3 of their National League Wild Card Series. Surprise starter Ray Kerr threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings for Atlanta, and Ozzie Albies launched a two-run homer in the fourth. Matt Olson added a solo shot in the seventh as the Braves advanced to a best-of-five Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Braves took a postseason series for the first time since winning the 2021 World Series and earned their first playoff series win against the NL East rival Phillies. Aaron Nola allowed three runs in 1 2/3 innings for Philadelphia.

(Green Bay, WI) — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be playing without starting quarterback Baker Mayfield who will miss Sunday’s game with the Packers. Green Bay needs a victory to avoid starting the season 1-and-3. Three new offensive linemen have been signed in an attempt to fix the team’s biggest problem, blocking. If Jordan Love gets time to throw and the running game produces anything at all, coach Matt LaFleur’s squad has a chance to even its record. Yahoo Sports reports that the Bucs defense has been giving up a lot of yards, so far.

(Madison, WI) — Badgers football has a new experience this week. Instead of trying to bounce back after yet another defeat, they are trying to maintain the momentum of the upset at Penn State. It helps that Michigan State’s top rusher, Cam Edwards, is out for the rest of the season. The Spartans could also be missing their best defender, linebacker Jordan Hall. Wisconsin is a nine-and-a-half-point favorite.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Brian Flores has become one of the most impactful and prominent assistant coaches in the NFL over four seasons as defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings with his knack for play calling and a gift for maximizing the group’s strengths. Flores might be doing his best work yet this year with the undefeated Vikings. He has the opportunity this week to show off his tricks to his old team, the winless Miami Dolphins. The Vikings have allowed the second-fewest points in the league and lead in sacks per pass attempt, touchdowns allowed inside the 20-yard line, and third down conversions.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Nick Foligno and Blake Coleman each scored in the first period, and the Minnesota Wild beat the Nashville Predators 3-1 in the season opener for both teams. The Wild lost in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs last spring in five games to Colorado. They are chasing a third straight postseason berth after giving coach John Hynes a contract extension last month. Kirill Kaprizov also had a goal for Minnesota. Roman Josi scored for Nashville. The Predators went 0 of 4 with the man advantage.

(Madison, WI) — The Wisconsin men’s hockey team opens the season at home tonight (Friday), taking on the Robert Morris Colonels in the Kohl Center. The Badgers roster includes 11 new faces following a season where the team made it to the NCAA Hockey championship game. Another 15 players are returning from that team. This will be the fourth season in Madison for veteran head coach Mike Hastings. He has taken his teams to the NCAA Frozen Four three times in the last six seasons.
