TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Myles Price returned a punt 86 yards for a score, Kyler Murray threw a 41-yard TD pass to Jordan Addison and the Minnesota Vikings beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-16. It was a costly game for both teams. Baker Mayfield hurt his thumb on a desperation pass late in the fourth quarter. He was screaming in pain on the ground before walking off. Two-time All-Pro wide receiver Justin Jefferson didn’t return for Minnesota after injuring his right ankle in the first quarter. The Vikings are 3-0 for the second time in three years. The Buccaneers are 0-3 for the first time since 2014.
(Milwaukee, WI) — St. Louis made it close with a late-game home run, but the Brewers still won 6-4 win Sunday. That was the franchise-record 103rd victory and now Milwaukee has some time off before the playoffs. Jacob Misiorowski completed what appears to be a Cy Young Award-winning season with 16 victories and 252 strikeouts. Gary Sanchez slammed his 12th home run and Jackson Chourio went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. The Brewers have a bye for the first round of the playoffs, then will take on the winner of the series between Chicago and San Diego.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Texas Rangers were eliminated from postseason contention on the final day of the regular season with a 6-4 loss to the Minnesota Twins, who got a home run and three RBIs from Josh Bell to back Dean Kremer’s seven innings of one-run pitching. Texas (80-82) needed a win and a Houston loss to the Athletics. Houston, which held the division tiebreaker, was leading 8-0 in the eighth inning when the Rangers game ended. Minnesota finished 77-85, a seven-win improvement in manager Derek Shelton’s first season.
NEW YORK (AP) — Houston’s Yordan Alvarez and Arizona’s Gabriel Moreno won their first batting titles Sunday, while Milwaukee ace Jacob Misiorowski became just the fourth pitcher since 1950 to lead the majors in ERA, strikeouts and opponents’ batting average. Alvarez’s .316 average was the lowest for the overall major league batting champion, below the previous mark of .325 by Dick Groat for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1960. Moreno’s .311 average was one point above Philadelphia’s Luis Arraez for the NL crown and he became only the fifth player with at least 50 starts at catcher to win a batting championship.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Breanna Stewart produced yet another clutch performance in the WNBA playoffs with 34 points and 12 rebounds for the New York Liberty in a 91-75 victory over the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx to open their best-of-three first-round series. Stewart added six assists, two steals and two blocks while shooting 11 for 18 with her friend and former college teammate Napheesa Collier guarding her most of the afternoon. Nia Brodie led the Lynx with 16 points and Kayla McBride had 14 points after missing her first five 3-point attempts. Star rookie Olivia Miles had a quiet postseason debut with 11 points.
NEW YORK (AP) — A’ja Wilson is in a class by herself, winning the AP’s WNBA Player of the Year honors for the third straight year. Wilson received 15 of the 17 first place votes from a national media panel Sunday. She topped Olivia Miles of Minnesota as well as Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana, who all had stellar seasons. It’s the fourth time that Wilson has won the AP Award, breaking a tie with Breanna Stewart for most all-time since the awards were first given in 2016. Angel Reese won AP Defensive Player of the Year for first time. Cheryl Reeve wins AP Coach of the Year for third time. Minnesota’s Olivia Miles unanimous AP Rookie of the Year.
(University Park, PA) — A 72-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Colton Joseph to senior tight end Jacob Harris with 1:13 left gave the Badgers a come-from-behind victory at Penn State Saturday, 24-20. Wisconsin had trailed 17-0 and 20-10 before taking the important win. Joseph threw two scoring passes in the final three-and-a-half minutes, bouncing back from three interceptions, including a pick-six. Fourth-quarter runs by Darrion Depree were big. The defense, led by linebacker Mason Posa, limited the favored Nittany Lions to 233 total yards. The Badgers take on Michigan State at Camp Randall Stadium Saturday for homecoming.
(Canton, NY) — The defending national champion Wisconsin women’s hockey team has opened the season with a series sweep. The Badgers blanked St. Lawrence 6-0 Saturday. Captain Kelly Gorbatenko and alternate captain Maggie Scannell each had a pair of goals. Goaltender Rhyah Stewart notched her first career shutout. Wisconsin returns to LaBahn Arena to wait for a Thursday game against Boston University Thursday.
(Green Bay, WI) — It’s possible that the Josh Jacobs era as the Packers’ top ball carrier is finished. Last week’s court ruling that evidence in his case won’t be sealed is important. Releasing the video of the incident is expected to make a significant difference in the way the NFL handles the situation. It’s possible Jacobs won’t be reinstated at all and there is the possibility the Packers will cut him.
MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) — The Americans have won the Presidents Cup for the 11th straight time with another turnaround at Medinah. President Donald Trump was on the first tee for the start of the 12 singles matches. The Americans leaned on their strength in singles to rally from a three-point deficit. One of the key matches in the turnaround came from 21-year-old Jackson Koivun. He rallied from 2 down on the back nine to beat Si Woo Kim. The Americans got early wins from Cameron Young and Justin Thomas and a key win from Collin Morikawa.
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Kyle Larson passed Chase Briscoe with seven laps to go Sunday, securing the NASCAR Cup Series victory at Kansas Speedway. Larson lead 235 laps, breaking his own track record. After losing the lead to Briscoe with 30 laps remaining, Larson regained it and finished ahead of Austin Cindric and Denny Hamlin. Larson also won the first two stages, giving him a 26-point lead over Hamlin in the Chase playoffs. Larson won a couple of weeks ago at St. Louis to end a 51-race winless streak, and he’s now finish in the top five of each of the first four races in the revamped playoff format. The NASCAR Cup Series continues at Las Vegas next Sunday.
