(Milwaukee, WI) — The Brewers exploded for six runs to break a 2-2 tie Wednesday afternoon, beating Tampa Bay 8-2. A two-run single by Christian Yelich put Milwaukee ahead. Brice Turang had tied the score at two with a two-run homer in the third inning. Jacob Misiorowski earned the pitching victory with six strong innings on the mound. Home plate umpire C-B Bucknor was knocked out of the game when a fouled pitch hit him in the mask. The Brewers are off today (Thursday) and will send Chad Patrick to the mound in the first game of a weekend series against the Kansas City Royals Friday.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jonathan India hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, powering the Kansas City Royals to a 13-9 victory over Joe Ryan and the Minnesota Twins. Kyle Isbel went 4 for 4 with a homer and Noah Cameron pitched five solid innings to win his season debut. India’s fifth career slam — and first with the Royals — capped a seven-run sixth as Kansas City sent 11 batters to the plate while taking a 12-1 lead. The Royals went 7 for 16 with runners in scoring position and scored eight runs with two outs. Cameron allowed one run and four hits while striking out five.
(Houston, TX) — The Bucks dropped a 119-113 game at Houston Wednesday night despite getting 36 points from forward Ousmane Dieng. Dating back to late January, Milwaukee has lost 21-of-26 NBA contests. Guard Cormac Ryan added 25 points, and forward Pete Nance had 23. The Bucks made the game close near the end, but couldn’t claim the lead. Milwaukee hosts the Celtics Friday night.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Led by Tounde Yessoufou’s 19 points, the Baylor Bears defeated the Minnesota Golden Gophers 67-48 on Wednesday in the College Basketball Crown. Cade Tyson led the way for the Golden Gophers with 19 points.
(Milwaukee, WI) — Marquette’s top assistant, Nevada Smith, is leaving to take the head coaching job at Siena in upstate New York. Smith has 22 years of experience and has worked the last eight years at the side of Golden Eagles head coach Shaka Smart. Anonymous Eagle reports that he has been given a lot of the credit for creating Marquette’s efficient offensive efforts.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Sarah Fillier scored two goals 14 seconds apart in the third period and she completed her first PWHL hat trick in overtime as the New York Sirens ended a four-game skid with a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Frost. New York won at the Prudential Center for the first time since March 8 when Fillier had two goals and three points. Minnesota has lost three straight games for the first time this season. The Sirens fell behind 1-0 just 16 seconds in as Taylor Heise scored on the first shot of the game. Minnesota forward Grace Zumwinkle scored the only goal of the second and she added another 44 seconds into the third. Fillier started the comeback with a breakaway and she added a rebound a few seconds later.
(Green Bay, WI) — The Packers’ record of successful draft picks becomes obvious in a study conducted by StickToTheModel-dot-com. Green Bay ranks third in the NFL for what is being called “draft value added. Only the Bills and 49ers ranked higher. Packers Wire-dot-com reports that general manager Brian Gutekunst has excelled in finding prospects who exceed their expected performance levels. The Packers have found a lot of good players, but not as many great ones as other teams. That could be affected by the usual lower draft position.
Former Wisconsin tight end Jack Pugh has died. He was 24. Wisconsin issued a post Tuesday night on its football program’s X account saying that Pugh had died. Details including cause of death were not given. Pugh redshirted in 2021 before appearing in one game and earning academic All-Big Ten honors in 2022. He announced in an Instagram post in December 2023 that he had decided before that season to medically retire. Pugh said at the time that “my physical health was not near perfect, but my mental health was the reason I decided to hang it up.”
