DETROIT (AP) — Colt Keith homered and the Detroit Tigers ended a seven-series losing streak with a 7-2 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday afternoon. The Tigers hadn’t won a series since taking two of three from the Cleveland Guardians from Aug. 11-13. They had lost 16 of their last 24 games before Wednesday’s win. The Twins have lost 12 of 18.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Santiago Moreno scored the go-ahead goal in the 84th minute and FC Dallas beat Minnesota United 2-1 to extend its home winless streak to nine games. Minnesota (7-8-8) has one win, a 5-1 victory at San Jose on Aug. 22, in nine games since the World Cup break and hasn’t won at Allianz Field since a 2-0 victory over Portland on April 18. Kaick Ferreira — known simply as Kaick — added a goal for Dallas (11-6-7), which has two only losses in its last 11 games. Petar Musa (upper body injury) did not play for Dallas. GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Green Bay’s Jordan Love already has established himself as one of the game’s elite quarterbacks as far as Packers coach Matt LaFleur is concerned. Love will certainly get a chance to prove that this season. The unsettled nature of Green Bay’s rushing attack because of three-time Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs’ legal situation means the Packers may have to depend on their passing game more than usual. The Packers open the season Sunday at Minnesota. Love hasn’t yet made a Pro Bowl despite leading the Packers to playoff berths in each of his three seasons as a starting quarterback.
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have listed six-time Pro Bowl safety Harrison Smith as a starter on the depth chart they released for their season opener against the rival Green Bay Packers. The coaching and medical staffs will confer this week to make sure Smith is fit for game action. Coach Kevin O’Connell raised no concern about the 37-year-old being ready to play right away. Smith recently agreed to a new contract to return for a 15th season. The Vikings also declared Carson Wentz their No. 2 quarterback behind Kyler Murray and ahead of J.J. McCarthy.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Quinn Hughes appears to be in no rush to get a contract extension done with the Minnesota Wild. Hughes said he does not feel pressure to agree to terms on a new deal before the start of training camp next week or the team’s season opener Oct. 1. Hughes said agent Pat Brisson and general manager Bill Guerin are in the early stages of negotiations after letting the situation breathe over the summer. Hughes, who turns 27, on Oct. 14, won the Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman in 2023-24 and could be in line to be among the highest-paid players in the league when his next contract kicks in.
