(Nashville, TN) — Pitcher Brandon Sproat is taking steps to return to the major leagues. Sproat came to the Brewers from the Mets in the trade involving Freddy Peralta last off-season. He and reliever Tate Kuehner combined on a 2-0 no-hit victory over Norfolk Sunday while pitching for Nashville. He had been sent down to Triple-A earlier this month after putting up a 5-point-27 ERA with Milwaukee. Sproat hasn’t allowed a run in his last two outings. Milwaukee meets the Mets tonight (Tuesday) in New York after a day off.

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Zebby Matthews allowed six hits and one run over seven innings, Josh Bell drove in three runs, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Athletics 9-6. Byron Buxton had three hits and scored four times, rookie Kaelen Culpepper had four hits for the first time in his 14th game, and Ryan Kreidler homered to help the Twins snap a three-game skid. Matthews (8-8) struck out seven and gave up one walk. Andrew Morris got his fourth save. Athletics starter Jeffrey Springs gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Cecilia Zandalasini scored eight of her 18 points in the fourth quarter, Gabby Williams added 15 points, and the Golden State Valkyries beat the Minnesota Lynx for the first time in franchise history, 80-66. Golden State (26-11) entered 0-9 against Minnesota in the regular season and playoffs since joining the WNBA in 2025. Golden State led 63-57 early in the fourth quarter before going on a 14-1 run to make it 77-58. Zandalasini made her first 3-pointer of the game with 4:39 left in the frame and she added another on Minnesota’s next possession for a 16-point lead. Veronica Burton had 14 points and nine assists, and Tiffany Hayes also scored 14 for Golden State. Janelle Salaun added 12 points off the bench. Minnesota was without starting guard Courtney Williams.
(Green Bay, WI) — NFL coaches and brothers, Matt and Mike LaFleur, are working together this week. The Packers will hold a joint practice with the Arizona Cardinals before the two teams meet in the final preseason game this Friday. Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur says if fighting breaks out during that practice he will tell his players to “tag me in” and he and Matt with “throw down” on the 50-yard line. ESPN reports that Matt says his parents, Denny and Kristi, will probably look like Christmas trees this week because they will be wearing red for the Cardinals and green for the Packers.
(Madison, WI) — The Badgers have reason to believe they have recruited their next top running back. Four-star prospect Kingston Allen opened his senior year last week by rushing for 464 yards and seven touchdowns in a 56-53 win over Neenah. Allen had scoring runs of 58, 69, and 90 yards, according to Bucky’s 5th Quarter. He is rated the top recruit in the state of Wisconsin and the number-two prospect in the Badgers’ recruiting class of 2027.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The eligibility chaos across college football has complicated the competition at Minnesota for the place kicking job. Brady Denaburg handled that job last year for the Gophers and was out of the picture until a federal judge in Denver ruled on July 31 that high school class of 2022 athletes were eligible for a fifth year. The appeals court ruling since then has put him back in the lurch. Minnesota also added New Mexico transfer Luke Drzewiecki after he benefited from a Louisiana state court ruling challenging the NCAA’s exclusion of class of 2022 athletes who had begun pro careers.
A recent rule passed by the NCAA has resulted in confusion, lawsuits and the once-unthinkable notion of players leaving college, signing with NFL teams, and now leaving those teams to head back to college. Among last week’s headline grabbers were Dae’Quan Wright, an undrafted tight end out of Ole Miss who had tryouts with the Eagles and Browns, but now has a deal in place to play this season at LSU. Wright is one of more than a dozen college athletes who have sued for the right to return to college, as the start of both the college football and NFL seasons approach.
(Milwaukee, WI) — The departure of superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo means the Bucks aren’t expected to make the postseason for the first time in several years. However, they also aren’t expected to finish last in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. Milwaukee isn’t given much chance to be among the top 10 teams in its conference. Dairyland Express-dot-com is projecting a finish in the 12-to-15 range, with 15 unlikely. Projecting results for the upcoming season is difficult right now because the team is likely to make more changes in its roster.
NEW YORK (AP) — Former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White are not eligible for the WNBA draft, according to a person familiar with the decision. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the situation. The person did not elaborate on the reasons for declaring the two men ineligible. Freedom and White have said they’ve declared for next year’s draft, but the WNBA has not publicly addressed their eligibility. The league’s collective bargaining agreement says the league is restricted to women, but it contains no more specific language. When they announced their intention to join the league, Freedom and White said they identified as women.
