MILWAUKEE (AP) — Max Muncy came within inches of hitting a grand slam for the Los Angeles Dodgers to open the scoring in the National League Championship Series. Instead, the Milwaukee Brewers turned it into one of the most incredible double plays in postseason history. With the bases loaded and one out in the fourth inning, Muncy hit a long drive to center field. Sal Frelick jumped and reached over the wall in an attempt to make the catch. The ball popped out of Frelick’s glove and hit the top of the fence before Frelick caught it in the air. He fired the ball in, and Brewers catcher William Contreras forced out one runner at home plate and another at third base for a most unusual 8-6-2 inning-ending double play.

TORONTO (AP) — Julio Rodríguez and Jorge Polanco hit three-run homers, Josh Naylor added a two-run drive and the Seattle Mariners took a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series by routing the Toronto Blue Jays 10-3. Seattle, the only big league team never to host a World Series game, headed home for Wednesday’s Game 3 needing two more wins to end that drought. Toronto had just six hits, only one after the second inning, and had eight hits in the first two games. Blue Jays star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was 0 for 3 with a walk and is hitless in the series.

(Madison, WI) — The Wisconsin men’s basketball team is ranked 24th in the first AP poll of the preseason. The Badgers are listed among the top 25 teams in that initial poll for the first time in five years. Coach Greg Gard’s squad is scheduled to meet at least seven ranked opponents this season. Veterans John Blackwell and Nolan Winter will be counted on for leadership.

(Green Bay, WI) — Packers coach Matt LaFleur tells reporters his team “avoided something serious,” according to an MRI of defensive end Lukas Van Ness’ foot injury. ACME Packing Company-dot-com reports that safety Javon Bullard left the action Sunday for a head injury, but won’t have to enter concussion protocol. LaFleur didn’t offer an update on wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks’ ankle injury.

(Madison, WI) — A four-game losing streak is impacting Wisconsin football recruiting. Wide receiver Tayshon Bardo of Indiana has decommitted from the program. Bardo had been a true believer and had been actively working to get other high school standouts to come to Madison. The Badgers’ losing streak is four games in a row with the 37-0 defeat against Iowa. Bucky’s 5th Quarter-dot-com reports that others could follow Bardo’s departure.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Marco Rossi scored the fourth round of the shootout and the Minnesota Wild beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 after blowing a three-goal lead in the third period. Power-play goals by Jared Spurgeon, Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy gave Minnesota a 3-0 lead late in the first period. The score remained until the third period when Kevin Fiala, Quinton Byfield scored early and Adrain Kempe late to send the game to overtime.
