(Chicago, IL) — The Chicago Cubs pounded nine home runs in an 17-3 win over the Brewers Monday night at Wrigley Field. That gave the Cubbies a National League record 62 homers in the month of August. Kyle Harrison took the loss and absorbed most of the damage but first baseman Andrew Vaughn gave up the last seven runs. Cooper Pratt slammed his third home run. MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Jeffers had two homers, Walker Jenkins went deep for the first time in his major league career, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 11-1. Taj Bradley (10-6) struck out nine in seven innings, his seventh outing with at least nine strikeouts. The 25-year-old right-hander allowed one run on four hits and allowed three walks. Jenkins, the Twins’ fifth overall selection in the 2023 draft, had a two-run homer in the eighth off of position player Zach McKinstry for his first big-league knock. The 21-year-old is the third-youngest player in baseball and was the top prospect in the Twins system before his call-up on Friday.
(Green Bay, WI) — The Packers’ front office was already preparing for the absence of veteran running back Josh Jacobs before he was placed on the commissioner’s exempt list last week. He still could face an extended suspension connected to the domestic abuse misdemeanor charges filed against him. Jacobs has a scheduled court appearance in November but the NFL doesn’t have to wait for the legal process to be completed before it takes action. Marshawn Lloyd is expected to get the first chance to fill the vacancy while Jacobs is out.
(Milwaukee, WI) — Less than three weeks before the NBA season opener and the Bucks’ possible starting lineup is becoming clearer. Behind the Buck Pass-dot-com projects the first five as being Tyler Herro, Ryan Rollins, Jaime Jaquez Junior, Kyle Kuzma, and Myles Turner. Kevin Porter Junior could replace Rollins but he excels coming off the bench. After Porter, the next five for Milwaukee would likely be rookie Brayden Burries, A-J Green, Gary Trent Junior, Ousmane Dieng, and Kel’el Ware.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman played for Luke Fickell at Ohio State and coached on his staff at Cincinnati. Fickell says he isn’t surprised at the way Freeman has developed into one of college football’s top head coaches in the years since they worked together. The two coaches meet again Sunday night when Freeman’s fourth-ranked Notre Dame team opens the season against Fickell’s Badgers at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Freeman had Fickell as his position coach while playing linebacker at Ohio State from 2004-08. Freeman also worked for Fickell at Cincinnati from 2017-20 as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.
(Madison, WI) — Oddsmakers project Notre Dame as a 20-and-a-half point favorite in Sunday’s season opener against the Badgers. So far, Bucky’s 5th Quarter-dot-com reports that 34 percent of the money is on Wisconsin to cover that big spread. That means a majority of the people putting their money down on the game expect the margin will be three touchdowns or more. The Badgers folded in a few games last season although the Iowa loss was the worst example. It’s important for them to be as competitive as possible when they take on the Fighting Irish. The betting line has them winning six-and-a-half games in the 2026 season.
The Minnesota Frost re-signed captain Kendall Coyne Schofield to a two-year contract, ending any concerns the 34-year-old may take a year off after helping the United States win an Olympic gold medal in February. The signing means the Frost will enter their fourth season with the same veteran leadership core intact since winning the PWHL’s first two Walter Cup championships in 2024 and ’25. The group is rounded out by alternate captains Lee Stecklein and Kelly Pannek. Coyne Schofield was one of the Frost’s first three foundational player signings. Her playing status for this season was uncertain after she remained unsigned, leaving her unprotected through the PWHL’s expansion process in June.
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from international soccer after 21 years representing Argentina. “It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts deeply — but I understand that the time has come,” the 39-year-old Messi says on his Instagram account Monday. Messi played in a record-tying six World Cups, won it in 2022 in Qatar and led Argentina to this year’s final, losing to Spain in extra time in New Jersey. He concludes his international career as Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals, 21 of which were in World Cups.
