SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Drew Gilbert homered and hit a two-run single, leading the San Francisco Giants past the Minnesota Twins 5-2 to snap a three-game losing streak. Brett Harris singled in a pair of runs for San Francisco in the first inning and Gilbert did the same in the second before leading off the fifth with his 11th homer. Brooks Lee homered to start the fourth against Giants starter Blade Tidwell, who exited after one more batter because of elbow discomfort. He will undergo tests Tuesday. Tidwell was coming off his first win with the Giants and second of his career last time out at St. Louis.
The Green Bay Packers are committing penalties at an alarming rate. Green Bay rallied from a 10-point, fourth-quarter deficit to beat the New York Jets 20-17 in overtime on Sunday despite committing 14 penalties for 133 yards. That followed a 39-22 loss at Minnesota in which the Packers committed 12 penalties for 98 yards. Sportradar says that matches the Packers’ second-highest penalty total for a two-game stretch since at least 1950. The Packers also committed 26 penalties over two games from Oct. 29 to Nov. 4 in 2007. They had 29 penalties over two games from Nov. 1-8 in 1987.
(Atlanta, GA) — The Atlanta Falcons have named Michael Penix Junior their starting quarterback for Thursday Night Football against the Packers. Penix suffered a serious knee injury last year in Week 11 and had been fully taking part in team practices since the end of the preseason. ACME Packing Company reports that he has posted a 4-and-8 record as a starting quarterback for the Falcons, but is a clear upgrade over Cooper Rush and Jack Strand, the team’s quarterbacks in the first two games. Tua Tagovailoa, Atlanta’s second stringer, is still rehabbing an injury.
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray has been cleared from the NFL concussion protocol and will return to action this week at Tampa Bay. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed that Murray will be back in the starting lineup for the game against the Buccaneers. Carson Wentz relieved him in the season opener against Green Bay and started in his place at Chicago on Sunday. Murray’s debut for Minnesota on Sept. 13 lasted just 11 plays. A hit to the side of his head from the lowered shoulder of Packers safety Javon Bullard forced him out of the game with a concussion.
(Madison, WI) — Respect for coach Luke Fickell’s Badgers is growing after the 54-10 victory over Eastern Michigan. Penn State is next on the schedule this Saturday. FanDuel Sportsbook lists Wisconsin as a nine-and-a-half-point underdog against the unbeaten and 13th-ranked Nittany Lions. Sports Illustrated reports that Fickell’s teams have met three highly-ranked Big Ten opponents and lost all three games. The last time the Badgers took on Penn State, they played them tough in the first half, trailing 14-13, but lost the game 28-13 during the 2024 season.
(Milwaukee, WI) — Former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers says he has no plans to coach again after 27 years on the sidelines. NBC has announced it has hired Rivers to act as an analyst during the upcoming season. The Associated Press reports that Rivers is saying he’s thankful that he was able to coach and play as long as he did. He’s worked television before, holding positions with Turner Sports and later, ESPN and ABC.
