(Milwaukee, WI) — The team with the best record in Major League Baseball has a few days to prepare for the postseason. The Brewers’ first game is set for Saturday, October 3rd, against the winner of this week’s series between the Cubs and Padres. That game will be played at American Family Field. The Milwaukee roster must be submitted to the league that Saturday morning. Any player on the Brewers’ 40-man roster, or 60-day injured list as of September 1st, will be eligible.
(Madison, WI) — The biggest comeback victory in 20 years wasn’t enough to boost the Badgers into the Top 25 rankings this week. Wisconsin was 26th. When coach Luke Fickell’s team shocked college football by wiping out a 17-point deficit with a huge fourth-quarter rally it was dramatic. The Badgers committed nine penalties, had three turnovers, were 4-of-15 on third down, and missed connections on more than half of their pass attempts. ESPN reported Penn State had a 98-point-5 percent chance to win after a Colton Joseph pass was picked off in the fourth period. Wisconsin got the 26th-most points in this week’s poll. It hasn’t been ranked since the start of the 2023 season.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers have added veterans Laken Tomlinson and Mekhi Becton to help out their struggling offensive line. The Packers added Tomlinson to their 53-man roster after picking him up from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad. Becton joined Green Bay’s practice squad. Tomlinson played 10 games for the Houston Texans last season and has made 169 regular-season or playoff starts. Becton started 14 games for the Los Angeles Chargers last season and underwent surgery for a torn labrum in March.
The New York Giants have acquired quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round pick. The Vikings announced the trade Monday pending McCarthy passing a physical. The Giants made the aggressive move days after Jaxson Dart had surgery on his left knee that will sideline him for at least the rest of the regular season. Jameis Winston started and beat Tennessee on Sunday, and coach John Harbaugh said afterward that Winston would get the nod again this coming weekend against Arizona. It’s unclear what that means moving forward after adding McCarthy.
(Milwaukee, WI) — New players, new coach, no Giannis – the Bucks say they’re better than people think at a Milwaukee news conference. Head coach Tyler Jenkins says he’s invested in building the next era of Bucks basketball. He was introduced, again, at a Monday news conference. The new face of the franchise may be Wisconsin native Tyler Herro, who says he thinks this team, “will be a lot better than people expect.” He promises media members they will compete and “surprise you guys.” The first preseason game comes up Monday against the Timberwolves.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards carried a heavy burden for the Minnesota Timberwolves last season while playing point guard and being limited to a career-low 61 games by injuries. The seventh-year superstar is back at his natural shooting guard spot with a refreshed outlook about his role on the court and the chemistry of the team off it. Edwards was moved after the Timberwolves acquired LaMelo Ball in a trade with Charlotte. He’s banking on more energy and fitness for playing defense, too, from the position switch. Edwards was also the catalyst this summer for trying to improve the chemistry among the players.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Lynx have received two major WNBA awards, with Olivia Miles as Rookie of the Year and Cheryl Reeve as Coach of the Year for a league-record fifth time. The WNBA announced the awards the day before the Lynx face New York for an elimination game in their best-of-three first-round playoff series. The top-seeded Lynx lost the opener at home 91-75 to the 2024 champion Liberty on Sunday. Miles was an unanimous selection by a national panel of sports writers and broadcasters covering the league after she set the WNBA rookie scoring record to beat Caitlin Clark in 2024.
