WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Carlos Cortes homered and Gage Jump struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings as the Athletics beat the Minnesota Twins 4-2. Jump pitched into the seventh for the first time since June 18 against the Angels, when he allowed one hit in seven innings. Cortes launched a two-run homer in the second. Tommy White hit an RBI double in the sixth and Donovan Walton added a run-scoring single, extending the lead to 4-0. Minnesota starter Taj Bradley tied his career high with 11 strikeouts, but gave up four runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out the side on nine pitches in the fifth for the first immaculate inning in Twins history.

(Green Bay, WI) — Don’t expect to see any starters take the field Friday when the Packers play their only home preseason game at Lambeau Field. The Arizona Cardinals have already arrived in Green Bay for a joint practice and that game. Yahoo Sports reports that head coach Matt LaFleur has pointed to this week as a critical one for his starting players. If they get the work they need against the Cardinals’ starters – and avoid injuries – the week will have been a good one.

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jeshaun Jones was issued a three-game suspension by the NFL for violating the league’s substances of abuse policy. The NFL’s announcement of the punishment did not disclose the nature of the violation. Jones spent each of the past two years on Minnesota’s practice squad. Jones went undrafted out of Maryland after totaling 2,040 receiving yards over a six-year career. The 26-year-old was going to have a tough time making the active roster with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison and Jauan Jennings locked into the starting spots and Tai Felton and Myles Price in line for backup roles.

(Milwaukee, WI) — For the second year in a row a Bucks draft pick is being sent overseas for more experience. Malique Lewis was taken in the second round of the 2026 NBA Draft. He is headed to Australia after signing a two-year deal with the Cairns Taipans. NBC Sports reports that the 21-year-old forward played for the South East Melbourne Phoenix last season, connecting on almost 39 percent of his 3-pointers and averaging seven points and four rebounds per game. Bogoljub Markovic was taken by Milwaukee in the 2025 draft, then played last season in Serbia.

(Madison, WI) — Pollsters are beginning to buy into some of the hype about improvements made in the Badger football program. Wisconsin is one of the biggest risers in The Athletic’s preseason rankings, going from number 80 to number 54. That leaves coach Luke Fickell’s team ranked 11th in the Big Ten, just behind the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 39th. The analysts think quarterback Colton Joseph can provide an offensive spark and they acknowledge that the Badgers defense was solid last season and should be even better this time.

The Southeastern Conference has passed a rule banning players who have been drafted by NFL, NBA or WNBA teams or listed on rosters in those leagues. With Tuesday’s move, the SEC joins the Big Ten in taking a stand against this month’s unexpected surge of pro players trying to return to college. The Big Ten only included football in its decision. The two conferences issued their new rules in response to court orders that were allowing players who had been on pro rosters, then released, to return back to college. LSU football coach Lane Kiffin has sought to add two such players.
