(Pittsburgh, PA) — With a 5-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Brewers clinch their fourth straight National League Central Division title. They had already won a playoff position last week. Jacob Misiorowski topped 100 miles per hour on 43 of his 82 pitches as he earned the win. Joey Ortiz and Luis Lara drove in two runs apiece. Logan Henderson starts for Milwaukee tonight (Wednesday) in the second game of the three-game series.
Pregame at 5:05pm. First pitch at 5:40pm on AM1240 & 96.5FM
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Max Fried earned his first victory since April 27, backed by home runs from Cody Bellinger and Spencer Jones that helped the New York Yankees keep pace in the AL East race with an 8-1 win over the Minnesota Twins. Fried allowed one run over seven smooth innings, logging his longest start in almost five months to ensure the Yankees stayed 3 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay (91-59) for the division lead. Fried, who spent 71 games on the injured list over two stints for a bone bruise in his elbow, has a 1.83 ERA with 50 strikeouts over 44 1/3 innings in nine starts after the All-Star break.
(Green Bay, WI) — Attorneys for the victim in the criminal case against Packers running back Josh Jacobs have filed a motion to have the evidence sealed permanently. They say they are trying to protect their clients’ privacy. Jacobs pleaded no contest to charges of battery and criminal damage to property. If the evidence is sealed, that would mean the NFL wouldn’t be able to review the video from the May 23rd incident. The NFL Network says the league wants the video as part of its investigation.
(Green Bay, WI) — Focus in Packers’ practices this week will zero in on the offensive line. Quarterback Jordan Love was hit 18 times in the loss to the Vikings. Coaches say they will likely move some personnel around as they seek solutions. Channel 3000 reports that offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich and offensive line coach Luke Butkus are saying everything is on the table now. They’re hoping to get last year’s starter Aaron Banks back into the lineup and could inject rookie Jager Burton after his promising work during training camp.
(Madison, WI) — Taking on Eastern Michigan in the third game of the season gives the Badgers an opportunity to put a lot of remaining doubts to rest. Running back Abu Sama the Third has a chance to put up some big numbers against a run defense that has looked porous. Though he has been dealing with injuries, quarterback Colton Joseph needs to find his rhythm before Big Ten Conference games begin. A productive passing threat is a mush. And, Yahoo Sports reports that failing to sack the quarterback in the last game is a concern, but Eastern Michigan gave up four sacks last week. There is reason to believe Wisconsin can check some of its concerns off the list in the game Saturday.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Wild coach John Hynes has signed a multiyear contract extension after leading the team to its first playoff series win in 11 seasons. The deal continues his long-running relationship with general manager Bill Guerin. Hynes is entering his fourth season with the Wild and 12th season as an NHL head coach. He has a 125-78-24 record in three seasons. Minnesota won a first-round playoff series over the Dallas Stars after finishing the regular season third in the Western Conference. The Wild’s 104 points tied for the third-highest total in franchise history. Hynes previously coached Nashville and New Jersey.
