(Milwaukee, WI) — Manager Pat Murphy confirms that NL Cy Young Award favorite Jacob Misiorowski will be the team’s starting pitcher for the first playoff game. The contest will be played Saturday in Milwaukee against the winner of the Cubs-Padres series. The Miz will be followed in the second game by 24-year-old right-hander Logan Henderson who had a breakout campaign. Henderson compiled an 11-and-3 record with an ERA of 2.47. Murphy says no decision has been made about keeping righty Dustin May in the postseason rotation yet.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Joey Ortiz believes he’s healthy enough to play in Milwaukee’s NL Division Series opener Saturday. But the Brewers are remaining careful with the 28-year-old infielder who underwent an MRI on his right knee last weekend. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy limited Ortiz’s participation in a Tuesday workout as the Brewers prepare to face the winner of the NL Wild Card Series between the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres. Ortiz left Milwaukee’s Friday night victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the eighth inning and didn’t play in the Brewers’ final two regular-season games.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins made a modest seven-win improvement this season while missing the playoffs for the third straight year and failing to generate much excitement within the disengaged fan base. The top prospects they called up down the stretch just might be able to help spark some more interest. Shortstop Kaelen Culpepper and outfielders Walker Jenkins and Emmanuel Rodríguez added to the energy generated from a high-scoring lineup led by on-the-rise players Luke Keaschall and Brooks Lee. Controlling owner Tom Pohlad said he plans to “meaningfully invest” in the roster to build around that core.

NEW YORK (AP) — Cam Schlittler pitched another playoff gem against the Boston Red Sox, and Ben Rice also burned their hometown team with a late grand slam and six RBIs as the New York Yankees opened this Wild Card Series rematch with a 9-0 victory. With the Yankees minus star slugger Aaron Judge because of a calf injury, Rice homered twice, doubled and finished with four hits to power the offense. No. 9 batter Austin Wells drove in two runs for New York, and 21-year-old rookie George Lombard Jr. had three hits in his postseason debut. Rice and Schlittler were both raised among Red Sox fans in Massachusetts and went to college in New England before getting plucked by the Yankees out of Boston’s backyard in baseball’s amateur draft.

ATLANTA (AP) — Austin Riley hit a three-run homer off All-Star closer Jhoan Duran in the eighth inning and the Atlanta Braves rallied past the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 on Tuesday in the opener of a best-of-three National League Wild Card Series. Duran, who allowed just two homers in 61 regular-season games, gave up a single to Michael Harris II before hitting Ozzie Albies with a pitch. Riley drove the go-ahead blast over the wall in right-center field. Harris had three hits. Braves ace Chris Sale dueled for much of the game against left-hander Jesus Luzardo, who was sharp after missing the last couple weeks of the regular season with left shoulder inflammation.

HOUSTON (AP) — Colson Montgomery hit a solo homer and Sam Antonacci drove in two runs to lead the Chicago White Sox over the Houston Astros 6-3 in Game 1 of an AL Wild Card Series. The White Sox, in the postseason for the first time since 2021, made a remarkable turnaround this year to become the only team in major league history to follow consecutive 100-loss seasons with a playoff berth. They had lost 100 games three straight seasons, including 121 defeats in 2024, setting the record for most losses since 1899.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jonquel Jones had 21 points and 13 rebounds and the No. 8 seed New York Liberty beat the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx 87-71 in Game 2 of their WNBA playoff series and advanced to the semifinals. Breanna Stewart added 21 points and Sabrina Ionescu had 18 to help the Liberty become the first No. 8 seed to eliminate a No. 1 seed in the league’s 30-year history. The WNBA has undergone a number of different playoff formats. And in many of the formats, it wasn’t possible for those seeds to match up. However, in 2022 the league changed to the current format in which the top eight teams play in the quarterfinals. Now, New York awaits the winner of the Atlanta-Washington series. The Dream are up 1-0 and play at Washington on Wednesday night. The semifinals begin Sunday.

(Green Bay, WI) — The Packers aren’t done yet. They have brought in a third offensive lineman as they try to plug big holes before Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay. Former Wisconsin Badgers offensive lineman Kevin Zeitler worked out for the team. Zeitler is 36 years old and a former first-round draft pick. He played for the Titans last season. There is one problem: signing him would use up almost all of Green Bay’s cap space, making more moves difficult.

(Madison, WI) — The Badgers are a nine-and-a-half-point favorite to win this Saturday’s home game against Michigan State. The Spartans are 2-and-2 so far this season. They will be missing top running back Cam Edwards after he suffered a season-ending injury. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a-m at Camp Randall Stadium. Michigan State brought in more than 50 new players through the transfer portal and incoming freshman this offseason.

Minnesota Wild defenseman Brock Faber is out indefinitely after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured skull. Wild general manager Bill Guerin said a timeframe for Faber’s return would be announced later. The 24-year-old Faber took a puck to the side of the head during the last preseason game. He skated the ninth-most minutes of any player in the NHL last season and was in line for a major role again on the top pair with Quinn Hughes. The Wild open the regular season on Thursday at Nashville. Hughes will skate with captain Jared Spurgeon instead.

(Milwaukee, WI) — Bucks veteran guard Gary Trent Junior tells reporters he is in Milwaukee to win. The NBA is investigating the four-year, 64-million-dollar contract Trent signed with the team during the offseason. Yahoo Sports reports that Trent says he can’t comment on the investigation, but he hopes the situation is resolved soon. He says the main focus is on winning championships in Milwaukee.
