SHELL LAKE, Wis. (WRN) — A spice blend made in Shell Lake is competing in the Coolest Thing Made in Wisconsin contest.

It’s called Maple Sugar Fika Spice. It’s named for the Swedish tradition of taking a coffee break and enjoying the moment.

Owners of the company Fika Spice, John and Holly Ellenson, of Shell Lake, say their product is great on many hot drinks and foods and is a great a source of health-promoting antioxidants.
“Maple sugar fika spice started from actually our original fika spice, and it’s a spice for coffee,” John said.

“And then we figured out it was great in tea, and then we’re like, oh my gosh, it’s great on yogurt and berries and oatmeal. And then you can bake with it, especially the fall baking right now is amazing,” Holly said.

“The whole reason behind it was just like, how can we help fight inflammation? And we knew that different spices and different foods do that. And to get nine in one jar was amazing. And then adding that Wisconsin maple sugar one was just like a really fun, beautiful taste, and it’s really been our award-winning one.”

The couple have been selling Fika Spices for about two years now, and they can be found at local shops as well as from their website, fikaspice.com
