MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Wild rice harvesters in Wisconsin may see better yields this season.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources forecasts an improved harvest for 2026 after several years of below-average production. A wet spring followed by a drier summer created stable growing conditions for the aquatic grass. Lower water levels on some lakes and rivers make for more challenging canoe, access, but good rice beds should be available for those willing to scout different locations.
The Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission’s Annual Harvest Outlook webpage includes helpful information for harvesters and conditions for some wild rice waters in Wisconsin, along with rules which apply to tribal and nontribal harvesters.
Peak harvest typically arrives in early September.
