MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Helping homeless veterans in Wisconsin presents many challenges.
Quentin Hatfield is Executive Director of the nonprofit Wisconsin Veterans Network
“The homeless situation has improved slightly with veterans, but we have nowhere near eliminated that problem,” Hatfield said.
Hatfield says cases involving unhoused veterans are becoming increasingly complex. As rents increase around Wisconsin, they’re assisting more veterans who have young children, and more elderly vets on fixed incomes
“We, the worst case scenario had an 87-year-old homeless veteran earlier this year. There’s absolutely no excuse for that. He’s not homeless right now, but that’s red alert. That’s just a red alert,” Hatfield said.
WVA recently received a $25,000 grant from the state Department of Veterans Affairs to continue serving veterans, one of 16 grants to veterans’ nonprofits totaling $550,000.
