MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — As fawns start appearing across Wisconsin, the Department of Natural Resources is reminding you to not step in and help if you see one on its own.
Captive wildlife health specialist Jenna Fastner says even well-meaning encounters can put young deer at risk.
“Keeping our scent away from them so that we don’t lead predators to them with our scent is very important. And mom is not going to come back and feed if we’re around because she sees us as a predator. She doesn’t want to give away the fawn’s location. And on top of that, they really need to learn those natural behaviors from their mom,” Fastner said.
