MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — A bipartisan tax relief and school funding package negotiated by Governor Tony Evers and Republican legislative leaders failed in the Legislature on Wednesday.

The $1.8 billion plan passed in the State Assembly, but the State Senate voted down the bill by a 15-18 margin with all Democrat senators and three Republicans voting against it. The Democratic governor criticized state lawmakers after the bill died, arguing that the agreement would have directed surplus funding toward schools, tax relief and working families.

The proposal would have eliminated state income tax on tipped and overtime income..
