CHICAGO (AP) — Shota Imanaga pitched seven shutout innings and Nico Hoerner had a bases-loaded triple and four RBIs to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 10-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer in the first and Imanaga took over from there, allowing six hits with one walk before leaving after 99 pitches. The left-hander has gone a season-high seven innings four times, also shutting out the Diamondbacks in a win on May 2.
(Las Vegas, NV) — Bucks rookie guard Brayden Burries emerged as one of the stars of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas. Burries scored 27 points, along with four rebounds, five assists, a steal, and a block in Saturday’s win over the 76ers. The 20-year-old connected on half of his shots, 36 percent of his 3-pointers, and scored more than 23 points a game while playing lockdown defense. Another rookie, Nate Ament, scored in double figures in his last two games – after a slow start.
(Madison, WI) — The Wisconsin football program has signed a new director of player development. Curtis Grant Junior replaces Chris Worley, who has moved to an on-the-field coaching role, according to BadgerNotes-dot-com. Worley will be working with defensive backs. Grant will be involved in handling name-image-likeness questions and movements through the transfer portal. He worked with head coach Luke Fickell while they both were at Ohio State between 2011 and 2014.
(Milwaukee, WI) — The Marquette men’s basketball team will take a trip to suburban Vancouver, British Columbia, later this month. Anonymous Eagle-dot-com reports the Golden Eagles will play an exhibition game July 29th against the University of Calgary. The Calgary Dinos went 17-and-17 last season. Marquette arrives in Canada July 27th and will stay through August 3rd.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Spain substitute Ferran Torres scored in the 106th minute to give his team a 1-0 win over defending champion Argentina in the World Cup final. Spain was absolutely dominant in terms of possession and shot attempts. Lionel Messi and Argentina found a way to hang on and force extra time — but barely. And in the opening moment of the second 15-minute period of extra time, Torres pounced on a bouncing ball in the box and used his left foot to bury a shot just under the crossbar and into the back of the net.
SOUTHPORT, England (AP) — Ryan Fox capped off an amazing week at the British Open with a finish he won’t forget. The 39-year-old from New Zealand made a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole for a 68 to capture his first major championship. It was only the fifth birdie on the tough closing hole at Royal Birkdale on Sunday. It gave Fox a one-shot victory over hard-luck Cameron Young. The American shot a 64 and waited more than two hours to see if it would hold up. It almost did until Fox kept bouncing back from bogeys and finished with a birdie.
NORTH WILKESBORO, N.C. (AP) — Joey Logano held off Denny Hamlin for his first NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season Sunday night in the first points race at North Wilkesboro Speedway in 30 years. Logano won for the 38th time in Cup, ending a 45-race drought that went back to May 2025 at Texas Motor Speedway. The 36-year-old Logano extended his streak of winning at least one race to 15 consecutive seasons, the longest streak among active drivers. The late Kyle Busch holds the record, winning in 19 straight seasons (2005-2023). Hamlin finished second, followed by Chase Briscoe, Ty Gibbs and Shane Shane Van Gisbergen.
Rice Lake WI – After a beneficial week off for fans to enjoy the Barron County Fair and other activities, the Rice Lake Speedway returns to racing action with a pair of huge upcoming events. The next ten days will include two of the biggest races on the entire season’s schedule.
First up, on Saturday night, July 25th, the Super Stocks get their special night as the Fastlane Motorsports Northland Super Stock Series pays a visit to the Rice Lake Speedway. Last year this race was run as a midweek show but this year returns as a part of the Saturday night program at the track and this should ensure an even bigger car count for the race.
So far the series has raced a pair of events in 2026 in Minnesota with the current point leader being Dylan Nelson from Merrifield Mn with Don Livingston from Washburn and Kyle Copp from Brule second and third in the current point standings. Eighty three different drivers have already raced in the series so fans should see a number of travelers set to take on the best local drivers that race at the speedway weekly.
Already this week this race has seen the top prize increased from a thousand dollars to win to fifteen hundred dollars plus Hard Charger and Low Tow Awards have been added also and there is certainly the possibility that there may be more increases as the week progresses.
Along with the Super Stock special, a full program will be held for the other four classes that race at the speedway weekly including the Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks. Regular weekly admission prices will be in effect, making this show a bargain for the racing public. The newly changed Summer racing hours will be in effect with the pit gate opening at 4 pm, the spectator gate at 5 pm, the draw cutoff is at 6:30 pm with racing at 7 pm.
Then, on Tuesday night, July 28th, the race fans have been waiting for all year takes place when the St. Croix Casino Street Stock Little Dream Race hits the speedway. The most famous race the speedway offers will once again seek to break the existing record for the largest first place payoff in the entire country. Last year’s winner Kyle Dykhoff returned to his home in Minnesota having earned $31,100 for his forty lap win and with the addition of the St. Croix Casino as the title sponsor for this race for the next five years, even bigger things are expected both this year and in the years to come.
The start money for both the Last Chance Race and the Feature race has been increased significantly thanks to St. Croix Casino along with Long Tow and Hard Charger awards, all of which should bring an impressive field of Street Stock drivers from several states to the track.
