BARRON, Wis. (WJMC) — The Governor was in Barron on Wednesday to tour the city’s new Main Street and promote clean water initiatives.

Asked about immigration Gov. Tony Evers said migrant workers without legal status, were vital to the state’s economy.

“Anybody that is undocumented is working our towns and cities and farms, are doing really important work. And we frankly can’t do that work without them,” Evers said. “I think we need to start the conversation not about who we are going to kick out, but what are we going to do to keep the people that we have here. I think that’s really important.”

State Republicans have proposed requiring sheriff’s check the citizenship status of anyone arrested for a felony, and Democrats have proposed banning immigration raids in schools, hospitals and churches. Evers declined to comment directly on the bills.
