BARRON, Wis. (WJMC) — Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald says he is stepping down as sheriff.

He made the announcement Monday, with his last day June 1. After 32 years in law enforcement, Fitzgerald said he is moving on to a public relations job with Mosaic Technologies, in Cameron.

Fitzgerald was first appointed sheriff in August 2008 by then Governor Jim Doyle, and has won re-election ever since. His department has handled large cases and events, including the Jayme Closs abduction in 2018 and response to the Chetek tornado in 2017.

Governor Tony Ever’s office will be seeking applicants to fill the remainder of the term through 2026.
