MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — New moms in Wisconsin will soon be eligible to receive expanded Medicaid coverage for up to a year.
“During one of the most medically vulnerable times in their lives, Wisconsin women deserve access to care,” said Madison Democrat Sheila Stubbs.
After passing the state Senate on a nearly unanimous vote last April, the measure was opposed by Assembly Speaker Robin Vos as an expansion of welfare.
“The legislation takes an existing population of eligible pregnant women and aligns it with their coverage, with their baby. And thank goodness we beat Arkansas,” said Representative Pat Snyder on persuading fellow Republicans.
Arkansas and Wisconsin were the only two states not to have accepted the expanded coverage. Following Thursday’s 95-1 vote* the bill heads to Governor Tony Evers for his signature.
