SIREN, Wis. (WJMC) — Scam emails, pretending to be from the Burnett County Land Services and Zoning Department, are attempting to defraud money from residents and businesses.
The department said the email came from the address “,” and it tries to trick recipients into paying a fee for fake “application review and approval fees.” Legitimate county emails use @burnettcountywi.gov, and the county will never request payment via wire transfer through an unsolicited email, officials said.
If you have received a suspicious email referencing Burnett County, do not reply, do not click on any links and do not wire money.
Anyone who has fallen victim to this email scam, should contact the Burnett County Sheriff’s Office at 715-349-2121.
The land services and zoning department recommends people contact their department directly to verify any communication before taking action with them.
