MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Be mindful of black bears this spring.

The Wisconsin Department of Resources says about 24,000 black bears are starting to emerge from hibernation in search for food and new territory. That could lead to encounters with humans.

The DNR advises that you never feed or approach bears. Residents should secure food, garbage cans and recycling bins; remove bird feeders during bear activity periods; and never leave pet food outdoors.

More information on avoiding black bears is available on the DNR website.
