RICE LAKE, Wis. (WRN) — For nearly 60 years, the event aims to promote fishing and tourism in Wisconsin’s Northwoods. Gov. Tony Evers said he got skunked by the weather last year, but is looking forward to this year’s opener.

“And I really hope that I’ll catch a fish.” Evers said. “Looking forward to it. You know, I did well a couple of years ago. The competition is always fun but at the end of the day, fishing is a part of the Department of Natural Resources world, but also part of the tourism world. It’s part of the economy, especially here in the Northwoods and whatever we can do to make it better, we’re going to do it.”

The public is welcome to come to the Family Fishing Day at Veterans Memorial City Park in Rice Lake. The event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will feature fishing lessons, the DNR Fishmobile, a casting contest, food vendors and family-friendly activities.
