MADISION, Wis. (WRN) — Last week’s collapse of a $1.8 billion state surplus deal between Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Republican legislative leaders highlights deep divisions inside both parties.

“Congressman Tom Tiffany expressing his opposition to the deal. So there were some mixed messages on the Republican side. We saw widespread opposition to this deal and vocal opposition to this deal within the Democratic members of the state legislature, even as their Democratic governor is the one who pushed for the deal,” said UW – La Crosse Political Science Professor Anthony Chergosky.

The bill would have sent rebate checks to taxpayers, raised the reimbursement rate for K-12 special education to 50% and increased state aid to reduce pressure on property taxes.
