MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — A new encyclical from Pope Leo the Fourteenth warns against using AI to uplift machines and technology over humanity.
Madison Bishop Donald Hying says the Pope’s message reenforces the Church’s position on the beauty of being human.
“Catholic Church is always going to lift up the dignity of the person, the centrality of the human being as created in the image and likeness of God, and that the human person can never be a means to an end,” Hying said.
Pope Leo likens the race to build bigger and better AI to the construction of the Tower of Babel, and urges that AI and technology should serve the common good rather than nations and businesses.
