(Detroit, MI) — The Detroit Tigers claimed the three-game series against the Brewers when first baseman Spencer Torkelson slammed a walk-off home run. Abner Uribe gave up the solo shot with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning. Milwaukee had scored three times in the seventh to wipe out a 3-1 Tigers lead. Uribe took the loss. Things don’t get any easier for the Brewers when they return home tonight (Friday) to face the Pirates and Cy Young Award-winner Paul Skenes.

NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets survived a ninth-inning bullpen mix-up when Huascar Brazobán went to the mound as closer Devin Williams started walking in, then hung on to beat the Minnesota Twins 10-8 behind Bo Bichette’s tiebreaking, three-run double for their second straight win after a 12-game skid. After placing star Francisco Lindor on the injured list with a calf injury, New York led 6-1 in the fourth, 7-2 in the sixth and 7-3 in the eighth before Ryan Jeffers hit the first grand slam Brazobán allowed in his big league career. Bichetti doubled in the bottom half and Brazobán went to the mound to start the ninth when Mets manager Carlos Mendoza instructed for Williams to enter.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jaden McDaniels and the Minnesota Timberwolves flexed even more of their defensive muscle against the flagging Denver Nuggets and seized a 2-1 lead in the first-round NBA playoff series with a dominant 113-96 victory. McDaniels had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Ayo Dosunmu scored 25 points with nine assists off the bench, and Donte DiVincenzo had 15 points and four steals. Rudy Gobert followed his inspired Game 2 effort against Nikola Jokic by stifling the three-time MVP again. The Timberwolves established a postseason franchise record by allowing the Nuggets just 11 points in the tone-setting first quarter.
(Milwaukee, WI) — The Bucks are moving quickly to hire Taylor Jenkins as the team’s new head coach. ESPN reports that Jenkins will take the place of Doc Rivers, who resigned earlier this month. During his six seasons leading the Memphis Grizzlies, the team put up a 250-and-214 record, making the postseason three times. If Milwaukee plans to trade superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jenkins has a track record of rebuilding the Memphis squad, turning it into a playoff contender quickly.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings selected Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks with the 18th pick in the first round of the NFL draft, adding some interior bulk and athleticism with a raw prospect whose recent injury likely pushed him down the board. The 6-foot-6, 327-pound Banks cracked the fourth metatarsal bone in his left foot in February while practicing for the 40-yard dash the night before the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. Injuries to his left foot caused Banks to miss games in 2023 and 2025 for Florida.
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Fernando Mendoza’s journey from overlooked two-star recruit to the top of the NFL draft is complete after the Las Vegas Raiders took him with the first pick on Thursday night. Turning the Raiders into a contender is the next challenge for the Heisman Trophy winner who led Indiana to its first national championship. The 22-year-old quarterback wasn’t in the Steel City for the festivities, choosing instead to celebrate with family and friends at home in Miami. Mendoza’s selection was expected for months. The intrigue began at No. 2 with the New York Jets, who selected Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey over Ohio State edge Arvell Reese. Arizona took Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love with the third pick.
(Green Bay, WI) — With no picks in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the Packers are talking about the fall season. Team president and CEO Ed Policy says a game against the Lions in Munich will be played at Ford Field instead. Cheesehead TV reports that Detroit protected the important home game against division rival Green Bay. Policy confirms that the Packers will play all nine home games at Lambeau Field in 2026. The NFL’s official regular-season schedule will be released next month.
[NOTE: The Packers have eight picks in this year’s draft tonight (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday). Their first pick, number 52, should come at about 7:35 p.m. CDT.]
(Madison, WI) — The Wisconsin men’s basketball program is getting closer to completing its roster with commitments from two more players this week. High school prospect Josh Manchester has been joined by Australian big man Isaac Riddle. The Basketball Center of Excellence rates Riddle as one of the top 12 players on that continent. Several other top-level Division One programs had recruited Riddle.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin interim athletic director Marcus Sedberry says he doesn’t know how long he might have this title. Nor is he worrying much about that. Sedberry is concentrating more on the present as he settles into his new position after Chris McIntosh’s surprise departure. Sedberry took over as interim athletic director on April 13 after McIntosh left to accept a newly created position as the Big Ten’s deputy commissioner for strategy. McIntosh had been Wisconsin’s athletic director since the summer of 2021.
