(Milwaukee, WI) — The Brewers took the rubber game of a series against Arizona with emphasis Thursday afternoon, 13-1. Catcher William Contreras went 4-for-4 with his third home run and four runs batted in. It became a bullpen game when starter Brandon Woodruff left the action with one out in the second. Shane Drohan earned the win in relief. Right fielder Sal Frelick had the game’s only home run. Milwaukee starts a weekend series in Washington tonight (Friday) against the Nationals with Jacob Misiorowski getting the start.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Byron Buxton homered for the third time in four games and Ryan Jeffers hit a go-ahead, two-run drive that led the Minnesota Twins over the Toronto Blue Jays 7- 1 in the opener of a four-game series. Daulton Varsho homered off Bailey Ober in the fourth and Jeffers put the Twins ahead to stay at 2-1 in the bottom half against Kevin Gausman. Buxton homered two innings later, his team-leading eighth, and Austin Martin added an RBI single later in the sixth. Minnesota won for the second time in its last nine games and the third time in 14.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jaden McDaniels had 32 points and 10 rebounds and Terrence Shannon Jr. scored 24 points in a surprise start for the injury-ravaged Minnesota Timberwolves in a 110-98 victory over the Denver Nuggets in Game 6 that finished off another tense NBA playoff series between the rivals. The Timberwolves went big with their top three guards missing to injuries for a 64-40 advantage in points in the paint and an 50-33 edge in rebounding. Nikola Jokic had 28 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds to lead the Nuggets. Minnesota will start the second round at San Antonio on Monday.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Taylor Jenkins is the Milwaukee Bucks’ new coach. The former Memphis Grizzlies coach takes over a Bucks team coming off a 50-loss season that snapped a string of nine straight playoff appearances. The Bucks’ Thursday announcement of this hire comes a week after reports surfaced that the two sides were finalizing an agreement. Doc Rivers had stepped down as the Bucks’ coach the day after they completed their 32-50 season. Jenkins coached the Grizzlies from 2019-25 and posted a 250-214 record that included three straight playoff appearances from 2021-23.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Quinn Hughes led Minnesota to its first playoff series victory in 11 years, scoring twice in the Wild’s 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 6 on Thursday night. Minnesota will face Presidents’ Trophy winner Colorado in the second round. The Avalanche have not played since sweeping Los Angeles on Sunday. The Wild won a playoff series for the first time in 10 tries since 2015. They lost to Dallas in the first round in 2016 and 2023. After Hughes broke a tie midway through the third period, Matt Boldy scored his team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the series into empty nets to seal it. Vladimir Tarasenko also scored and Jesper Wallstedt made 22 saves. Wyatt Johnston and Mavrik Bourque scored for Dallas.

(Green Bay, WI) — The Packers have exercised their fifth-year option on edge rusher Lukas Van Ness. The move means Van Ness will make almost 14 million dollars in the 2027 season. His earnings will be just over three million in 2026. The deal was reported by The Athletic-dot-com. It means Green Bay will retain control of a talented defensive asset while he hopefully continues his development.

(Madison, WI) — The effort by the University of Wisconsin men’s basketball program to keep top high school prospect Kager Knueppel in state just became a little more complicated. The Badgers whiffed on Knueppel’s older brother, Kon, who just completed his NBA rookie season. Kon played at Duke before going pro, and now that blue blood program is coming after the younger brother. It made an offer earlier this week.

(Madison, WI) — An East Coast prospect who got a reported 11 offers in recent days has now committed to play his college football in Madison. Sports Illustrated reports that defensive line prospect Will Zaccagnino was being pursued by top programs like Michigan State, Missouri, and UConn. Zaccagnino is called a high-floor prospect. The 3-star player is ranked the number four prospect in Connecticut and number 121 nationwide.
