(Detroit, MI) — The Brewers scored first, but the lead didn’t last long. Detroit used strong pitching and a pair of home runs to claim a 5-2 victory Wednesday. That evened the series at a game apiece. Chad Patrick took the loss in relief after giving up four runs in four innings. Milwaukee hasn’t hit a homer since Saturday. Rookie Brandon Sproat starts this afternoon’s (Thursday’s) rubber game.

NEW YORK (AP) — Mark Vientos blooped a tiebreaking single in the eighth inning and the New York Mets snapped their 12-game losing streak, beating the Minnesota Twins 3-2 after getting one superstar back only to see another exit with a similar injury. Juan Soto went 1 for 3 with a single and a walk in his return from a strained right calf, but shortstop Francisco Lindor was removed with left calf tightness after laboring around the bases while scoring from first on Francisco Alvarez’s go-ahead double in the fourth. Byron Buxton tied it 2-all with a leadoff homer in the sixth against Mets starter Clay Holmes.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Wyatt Johnston scored on a power-play deflection at 12:10 of the second overtime to give the Dallas Stars a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild early Thursday for a 2-1 lead in the first-round series. Matt Duchene tied it for Dallas on a power play midway through the third period seconds after his backcheck on Matt Boldy averted a short-handed goal that would’ve put Minnesota up by two. Mikko Rantanen and Jason Robertson scored to put the Stars up 2-0 in the first period. Marcus Johansson, Joel Eriksson Ek and Michael McCarron had goals in the Wild’s rally.

SEATTLE (AP) — Alex Carpenter and Gabrielle David scored nine seconds apart, Anna Wilgren added a goal for her third in two games, and the Seattle Torrent beat the Minnesota Frost 5-4 for their first victory in the series. Seattle (8-1-4-16) secured three draft-order points to take the top spot in the Gold Plan standings for a chance at the first overall pick in the PWHL entry draft. Minnesota (13-3-4-9), which had already clinched third place, had won the previous three games against the Torrent in regulation. Carpenter, who entered with at least one point against every PWHL team this season except for Minnesota, knocked in a loose puck to tie it at 2-all and David sent a shot over goaltender Nicole Hensley. Captain Hilary Knight gave Seattle the lead for good.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Anthony Markanich scored in the first half, Drake Callender made three saves for his fourth clean sheet of the season and Minnesota beat FC Dallas 1-0. Minnesota (5-2-2) has won four-straight games for the second time in club history, with the previous streak coming in 2019. Dallas (3-2-4) entered on an 11-game home unbeaten streak across all competitions. Markanich, the MLS top-scoring defender last year, finished his own rebound in the 32nd minute for his second goal of the season. Goalkeeper Michael Collodi made a nice reaction save with his left foot, but it bounced off a Dallas defender for a calm finish by Markanich. Markanich has 11 regular-season goals as a Loon. Callender also recorded a clean sheet in his past two home matches.

(Milwaukee, WI) — The Bucks are interested enough in having Taylor Jenkins be their next head coach that three team officials traveled to Memphis to talk to him. Jenkins spent six seasons coaching the Grizzlies, making the NBA playoffs four times. He was an assistant under Mike Budenholzer during the 2018-2019 season in Milwaukee. The Athletic reports that team owners Wes Edens and Jimmy Haslam joined general manager Jon Horst at the meeting. No agreement was reached, but a follow-up meeting is expected.

(Durham, NC) — Former Badgers guard John Blackwell says his role with the Duke Blue Devils will help him elevate his game to the next level. Blackwell left Wisconsin through the transfer portal in a move announced this week. He says he will be the point guard for Duke. Blackwell says he has nothing but positive things to say about the Badgers, but he needed to make the move as he prepares for what he hopes will be an eventual transition to the NBA.

There will be eight new starting quarterbacks in the Big Ten this fall, and six will be experienced transfers who arrived at their new schools this spring with jobs all but locked up. No QB will be watched more than Josh Hoover. He takes over for Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza at defending national champion Indiana. Hoover threw for 9,600 yards and 71 touchdowns in three years at TCU but had an issue with turnovers. Other transfers who’ll be starters are Illinois’ Katin Houser, Nebraska’s Anthony Colandrea, Northwestern’s Aidan Chiles, Penn State’s Rocco Becht and Wisconsin’s Colton Joseph.

(Washington, DC) — US Senator Tammy Baldwin has introduced federal legislation requiring all NFL games to be available to fans of a team. When Green Bay blew an 18-point lead against the Chicago Bears in the playoffs, the game was broadcast only on Amazon Prime. Baldwin says two million Packer fans had no access without a Prime subscription, and that is the inspiration for her bill. WITI-TV reports that the Packers don’t support the veteran lawmaker’s so-called “For the Fans Act.”
