(Milwaukee, WI) — An early lead didn’t last long as the Brewers dropped a 6-2 decision to Arizona Wednesday night. Diamondback relievers set down the last 13 batters. Milwaukee jumped out on top 2-0 but gave up the lead in a four-run fourth inning for the visitors. Rookie Brandon Sproat absorbed his second loss. Right-hander Brandon Woodruff starts the rubber game of the three-game series this (Thursday) afternoon.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Milwaukee Brewers left-handed reliever Angel Zerpa is on the injured list because of left forearm tendinitis. The Brewers announced Wednesday that Zerpa had gone on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Sunday. The Brewers selected left-hander Brian Fitzpatrick from Triple-A Nashville to replace Zerpa on the roster. Zerpa is 0-2 with a 6.39 ERA and two saves in 12 appearances. He allowed at least one earned run in each of his last three outings. The Brewers acquired him from Kansas City in a December trade that sent outfielder Isaac Collins and pitcher Nick Mears to the Royals.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Cole Young had three late-inning RBIs for the Seattle Mariners, including the go-ahead two-run single in the ninth in a 5-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins. Young reached for an outside pitch he slapped in front of the mound and just past the glove of Twins reliever Eric Orze with the infield drawn in during a three-run inning. Andrés Muñoz pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save in seven attempts as the Mariners won for the eighth time in 11 games. Taj Bradley posted his fourth quality start in seven turns for the Twins before their bullpen faltered again.
(Green Bay, WI) — The Packers have signed wide receiver Jayden Reed to a three-year, 50-million-dollar contract extension. ESPN reports the deal includes some injury protections for the team, and it also retains some additional cap space for Green Bay. That could make it easier to come up with deals for players like Christian Watson and Tucker Kraft. Because of the per-game bonuses included in the deal, Reed’s base salary actually went down.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin doesn’t want to refer to itself as “Running Back U” until it performs at a level that would make Ron Dayne, Jonathan Taylor and other former Badgers ball carriers proud. That task gets easier if Wisconsin starts resembling “O-Line U” again. Wisconsin earned those “RBU” and “O-Line U” nicknames during its glory years as its superstar backs dominated games while future NFL linemen cleared their paths. The Badgers didn’t run the ball nearly that well while going 9-15 over the last two seasons. Luke Fickell’s coaching future at Wisconsin likely depends on whether the Badgers run the ball effectively again.
(Milwaukee, WI) — University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee head basketball coach Bart Lundy is expecting some big production from a new player arriving through the transfer portal. Tre Norman joins the Panthers from the crosstown Marquette Golden Eagles. Norman has played 94 games for the Eagles over the last three seasons. The 6-4 senior-to-be has averaged two points and 1-point-4 rebounds per game at Marquette. He was a top-100 national recruit when he was coming out of high school.
DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn has been fined by the NHL for cross-checking Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman after a heated exchange between the players during Game 5 of the first-round playoff series. The maximum allowed fine of $2,604.17 was announced Wednesday. The play between Benn and Hartman came with 5:15 left in the Wild’s 4-2 win on Tuesday night that gave them a 3-2 series lead. Both got minor penalties. The Wild host Game 6 on Thursday night.
(Tampa, FL) — Former Badger Ryan McDonagh has appeared in his 200th NHL playoff game. Only 24 pro hockey players have reached that mark in history. At the top of the longevity list is another former Wisconsin player, Chris Chelios. McDonagh played for UW from 2007-to-2010. He was on the ice as the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup in 2020. In this year’s playoffs, the Lightning are tied with the Montreal Canadiens two games to two.
