LOS ANGELES (AP) — Trey Yesavage set a World Series rookie record with 12 strikeouts, and the Toronto Blue Jays opened Game 5 with back-to-back homers in a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers that moved them within one win of their first championship since 1993. Davis Schneider and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. connected on Blake Snell’s first and third pitches, the first consecutive home runs to start a Series game. Yesavage, a precocious 22-year-old right-hander who began his season pitching before 327 fans in Class A, broke the prior rookie record of 11 strikeouts set by Don Newcombe for the Dodgers in 1949. Toronto leads 3-2 in the best-of-seven matchup and can dethrone the defending champions back home when the Series resumes Friday night at Rogers Centre.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Austin Reaves swished the 12-foot winner in the lane right before the buzzer to finish with 28 points and lift the Los Angeles Lakers to a 116-115 victory after the Minnesota Timberwolves had taken the lead with a late 14-2 run. Reaves matched his career high with 16 assists, Jake LaRavia had 27 points on 10-for-11 shooting, and DeAndre Ayton added 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who were up 112-101 after a 3-pointer by Reaves with 4:01 left. Julius Randle, who led the Wolves with 33 points, capped the furious rally by dropping in the go-ahead finger roll with 10.2 seconds left.
(Milwaukee, WI) — He’s been excellent so long it’s like the NBA observers were taking him for granted. Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo is showing he’s still at the top of his game. Sports Illustrated reports that former NBA big man Kendrick Perkins is watching. Perkins posted on social media: I know Wemby has put the world on notice … but Giannis is still the most dominant player in the league. Antetokounmpo gets his next chance to stay at the top when the Bucks play the Golden State Warriors tonight (Thursday).

(Madison, WI) — The Wisconsin men’s basketball team showed some improvement – especially on defense – in its second exhibition game Wednesday night. Junior center Nolan Winter scored 17 points and had 15 rebounds in a 69-53 win over UW-Platteville. The Badgers lost their first exhibition game last week, 84-83, against Oklahoma. The defensive effort was more effective against the smaller Platteville squad. The regular season tips off with a five-game homestand beginning Monday against Campbell.
(Green Bay, WI) — Packers quarterback Jordan Love has been named the NFL Offensive Player of the Week. Early in his career, he is beginning to reach the potential the front office saw several years ago. In his first 40 starts, Love has produced 16 games where he threw multiple touchdown passes without being picked off. Only Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has topped that efficiency in the history of the NFL, with 19.
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — This wasn’t the type of start Nate Hobbs had in mind when the former Las Vegas Raiders defensive back signed with the Green Bay Packers. Hobbs dealt with a knee injury during training camp, struggled through the first half of the season and finally fell out of a starting cornerback role Sunday during the Packers’ 35-25 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hobbs says his struggles aren’t a result of feeling extra pressure to live up to the four-year, $48 million contract he signed in the offseason.
(Milwaukee, WI) — It’s official – second baseman Brice Turang gives the Brewers the most “bang for their buck.” Turang’s best Major League season so far makes him the best value on the roster. Reviewing the Brew-dot-com reports that he hit .288 last season, with a .359 on-base percentage, and .435 slugging. That’s 24-percent above average. He also put up seven defensive runs saved, and his paycheck? It’s just 777-thousand dollars.
