ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jacob Misiorowski struck out 11 in seven strong innings, Christian Yelich drove in a pair of runs and the Milwaukee Brewers rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 in the first game of a split doubleheader. Misiorowski (10-4) allowed three hits, including a pair of homers, and didn’t walk a batter. The 24-year-old right-hander threw 57 of his 103 pitches at 100 mph or more. Aaron Ashby pitched a scoreless eighth and Abner Uribe earned his sixth save in eight opportunities as the Brewers won their third straight. Jordan Walker and Iván Herrera homered for the Cardinals.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Joey Ortiz homered, Robert Gasser pitched a career-high 7 2/3 innings and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-2 Tuesday night to complete a doubleheader sweep. Jacob Misiorowski struck out 11 in the first game of the split doubleheader, which was a makeup from May 5, and the Brewers won 4-3. Milwaukee has won four straight games and seven in a row against St. Louis. The Cardinals lost their fourth straight. Gasser (2-3) allowed just a two-run homer to Nelson Velázquez. He struck out four, walked one and scattered four hits.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Taj Bradley allowed one run and struck out 10 in seven innings, Kody Clemens had two hits and an RBI, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-1. Bradley, who set a career best with 11 strikeouts in his last outing July 1 at Houston, had swing-and-miss stuff all night, with a career-high 25 swinging strikes. He allowed three hits and walked none. The Twins scored twice in the second inning on Austin Martin’s sacrifice fly and a two-out single by Brooks Lee. Clemens drove in a run with a triple in the seventh. Rhys Hoskins homered for the Guardians.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — New Wisconsin athletic director Shawn Eichorst spent the last eight years at Texas, and he believes his new and old schools have much in common. Both are well-regarded research universities in state capitals that belong to major conferences and have relatively similar enrollments. Wisconsin now will try to replicate the success Texas has enjoyed the last several years, particularly in football. Eichorst most recently worked as a deputy athletic director at Texas. He came to Texas after Nebraska fired him as athletic director during the 2017 football season. Eichorst is a Wisconsin native.
ATLANTA (AP) — Lionel Messi let the tears flow at the final whistle, succumbing to emotion after Argentina conjured up an incredible two-goal comeback to beat Egypt 3-2 and advance to the World Cup quarterfinals. Argentina’s three goals came in the final 11 minutes of regulation and injury time. Messi played a direct hand — or foot — in two of them. He assisted on Cristian Romero’s header in the 79th minute and leveled the match at 2-2 four minutes later. Messi’s goal marked his eighth of this year’s World Cup, putting him at the top of the Golden Boot race.
SEATTLE (AP) — The U.S. men’s national soccer team remains stagnant despite growth in American soccer. Christian Pulisic and teammates have not advanced beyond the round of 16 at the World Cup, similar to past teams. The U.S. lost to Belgium 4-1 on Monday in the round of 16. Billions have been invested to boost the team, but it remains far from elite. Coach Mauricio Pochettino plans to discuss his future with the U.S. Soccer Federation. Goalkeeping has become a weak spot, and qualifying for future World Cups should be less challenging with 48-team tournaments. Folarin Balogun and Malik Tillman have shown promise.
