MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Governor Tony Evers criticized state Senate Democrats for failing to support the tax relief and K-12 funding plan he brokered with Republican leaders.
Democratic Senator Mark Spreitzer of Beloit says the failure rests with Evers’ office:
“Look, obviously, Governor Evers and the Democrats share a concern for our public schools, share concern for families that are hurting right now. And it is unfortunate that this was handled the way it was and led to some of the conflict between us because ultimately we share a lot of values, but obviously differed in what the right approach was here,” Spreitzer said.
Citing concerns that tapping into the state surplus would lead to a budget deficit, Democrats joined three Republicans to kill the $1.8 billion deal.
