A proposed state match for “Trump Accounts.”
President Donald Trump calls his administration’s new investment accounts for kids “transformative.”

“Decades from now, I believe the Trump accounts will be remembered as one of the most transformative policy innovations of all time,” Trump said.

The Big Beautiful bill signed into law by Trump included a provision allowing parents to create an IRA account for their children. State Representative Elijah Behnke wants the state to provide a match.

“The Wisconsin policy will reflect all the federal policies. It supports a long-term plan and helps families personally invest. So you can invest $25 a month after the federal government and the state government invests in this Trump account,” Behnke said.

Behnke said lawmakers would tap the state’s budget surplus for $1,000 of state funds for Wisconsin kids to match $1,000 the federal government would put into accounts for babies born between January 1 through the end of 2028. Parents must opt in and open the accounts for the funds to be set aside and then invested.
