MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — Before you head out into the woods for the gun deer season this weekend, be sure to be safe.
Wisconsin DNR warden Jeff Mulroney says every hunter should remember the basic rules of firearms, and be sure you’re secure when getting in and out of a deer stand.
“Everyone should keep in mind TAB-K when they head out into the woods. T is treat every firearm as if it is loaded. A is always point the muzzle in a safe direction. B: be certain of your target; what’s before it, and what’s beyond it, and K: Keep your finger outside the trigger guard until safe to shoot,” Mulroney said. “When you’re climbing those ladders, climbing those tree stands keep three points of contact with the tree or the ladder. Either two hands and a foot or two feet and a hand as you’re climbing.”
Be sure to wear your blaze orange, and if you’re hunting in a group be sure of where everyone in your hunting party is at all times. Be sure to check the safety of any deer stand before you get into it, and be sure someone knows where you’ll be hunting and when you will be back.
