SUPERIOR, Wis. (WRN) — More Wisconsin communities are enacting or considering data center moratoriums.
The Superior Telegram reports Councilor Garner Moffat will propose a one-year moratorium on data centers. While no data centers have been proposed in Superior, Moffat said a temporary pause allows the city to develop clear policies.
An 18-month moratorium on hyperscale data centers is in place in Dane County. In a press release, County Executive Melissa Agard said that gives the county time to evaluate impacts and make any needed policy changes. The county board previously voted unanimously to approve the pause.
The City of Madison, Manitowoc and Door counties have moratoriums ranging from one to two years. Sheboygan and Oneida and Dodge counties are considering similar action. Hyperscale data centers are under construction in Beaver Dam, Mount Pleasant and Port Washington.
