MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — It’s Identity Theft Awareness Week and the Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection has tips to avoid falling victim to a scam.
“You can avoid storing sensitive personal information on devices like a cell phone or a personal computer. These devices and the data on them can be fraudulently accessed by scammers or identity thieves,” says DATCP Administrator Michelle Reinen. “When physical documents that contain personal information are no longer needed, destroy them using a micro-cut shredder, and then don’t share personal information in response to a cold call, a text message, or an e-mail. You should never hand over that personal information.”
Visit DATCP’s website for more tips and information on what to do if you’ve fallen victim to identity theft.
