CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WRN) — Two sites serving Wisconsin veterans who are homeless are now closed.

Veterans Housing and Recovery Program sites in Green Bay and Chippewa Falls closed September 12th due to a lack of funding. Joey Hoey with the Department of Veterans Affairs updated a state Senate committee last week

“With the help of veteran advocates, our partners at Lutheran Social Services and others, we were able to provide all the veterans in our care at Green Bay and Chippewa Falls with alternative options,” Hoey said.

Including the remaining site at Union Grove. The committee heard support from veterans’ groups for a bill from state Senate Andre Jaqcue to provide funding. But Hoey explained

“The earliest we could restart that program in Chippewa Falls would be sometime after October 1st, 2026. Just the sad reality of what happened in the budget.”

Program funding was not included in the final budget compromise between Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Republican legislative leaders earlier this year, resulting in not unfamilier partisan finger pointing from the governor’s office and lawmakers.
