(Milwaukee, WI) — Two Milwaukee Brewers share National League Player of the Week honors. Jacob Misiorowski and Jackson Chourio were honored by Major League Baseball for their performances June 8th through the 14th. Misiorowski threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout against the Philadelphia Phillies last Friday, striking out 15 batters. Chourio has been on fire with the bat, with five home runs among 13 hits, good for a .448 batting average and 10 runs batted in. Four Brewers are in the top 5 vote-getters at their positions for this year’s All-Star game. Second baseman Brice Turang is the only one with enough support to advance to the second round after June 25th.
Tonight the Brewers host Cleveland. Pregame at 6:05pm. First pitch at 6:40pm on AM1240 & 96.5FM
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Josh Bell hit a three-run homer in the first inning, Byron Buxton went deep for the 23rd time this season leading off the sixth and the Minnesota Twins beat the Texas Rangers 4-2. All six runs in the game came off homers, with Texas’ Joc Pederson delivering a two-run shot in the third off rookie Mike Paredes. Minnesota’s 25-year-old left-hander fell an out short of his first major league win. Buxton has homered in six of his past nine games to get within one of major league leaders Yordan Alvarez of Houston and Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Natasha Howard had 18 points to lead seven players in double-figure scoring for the Minnesota Lynx in a 107-74 victory over Portland. Nia Coffey contributed 15 points, five rebounds, three steals and three blocks in her best all-around performance of her debut season with her hometown team. The Lynx roared back from their loss at Las Vegas to improve to 11-3. Coffey sank all three of her 3-point tries in a 35-point first quarter that matched the team’s season high for any period. The Lynx built a 27-point lead by the middle of the third.
(Washington, DC) — Congress is discussing the idea of making changes to the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961. Wisconsin Public Radio reports that the Green Bay Packers are keeping an eye on developments because doing away with it would hurt. The law, instituted 65 years ago, gave professional sports a partial exclusion from antitrust laws when it came to broadcasting games. That allows the NFL to make deals, then split the profits with its member teams. If the Packers had to conduct individual negotiations, being in such a small market would cost the team millions.
(Madison, WI) — The opponent for the Wisconsin men’s basketball season opener has been announced. The Badgers will host Denver at the Kohl Center November 2nd. This will be just the second meeting between the two programs. UW hasn’t lost a season-opener in six years.
(Madison, WI) — College football expert Phil Steele sees Wisconsin doubling the four wins it put up last season – or, maybe even more. Steele, on his website, says coach Luke Fickell will reward the school’s patience by getting the football program back on track. He adds that the much easier schedule will be a factor in that improved performance. PhilSteele-dot-com predicts that eight wins are very possible for the Badgers.
LONDON (AP) — Serena and Venus Williams are bringing their doubles partnership back at Wimbledon. The All England Club has announced a doubles wild card invitation for the Williams sisters to the tournament which starts in less than two weeks. The move comes after 44-year-old Serena recently returned to competition after nearly four years away from professional tennis. Venus has still been competing sporadically and turns 46 on Wednesday. The Williams sisters have won 14 Grand Slam titles together in doubles including six at Wimbledon. Their last title together at Wimbledon came a decade ago and the first came more than a quarter century ago.
