On this day in US history, Title XI of the Education Amendments was officially enacted into law on June 23, 1972. Title IX was put in place to prohibit federally funded educational institutions from discriminating against students or employees based on sex. Before that, women were unable to pursue similar opportunities to men. The NCAA used to not have scholarships for women, nor did they have proper locker rooms or facilities. Once Title IX was enacted, women’s participation in sports grew exponentially in both high school and college.
