MADISON, Wis. (WRN) — E-bikes and e-scooters are becoming much more popular, and UW Health Dr. Nicholas Kuehnel calls youth injuries involving them a looming crisis.

“The bottom line is that we are witnessing serious and an alarming trend in e-bike and e-scooter injuries. These injuries are not just scrapes, bumps, and bruises. They’re life-altering. And there’s real concern within the medical community that this will only continue to worsen,” said Kuehnel.

Riders younger than age 20 accounted for 44% of those involved in e-scooter crashes in Wisconsin last year, compared to 18% in 2024.
